Pfizer Announces Layoffs in Tampa

Pfizer, one of the world’s largest biopharmaceutical corporations will lay off 62 employees at its Tampa office located in Heights Union. According to a report in Tama Bay Business Journal, Pfizer submitted a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification to the state on December 19, indicating that certain staff members will be laid off due to the closure of its Pfizer Connect business at that location.

According to Pfizer’s website, Pfizer Connect is a notification service designed to keep patients informed about clinical trials and research opportunities.Pfizer’s move comes after its competitor, Bristol Myers Squibb, announced last quarter that it planned to cut its Tampa office staff by more than half.

“Pfizer has been actively engaged in reducing its cost base to operate more efficiently and effectively.,” Pamela Eisele, a Pfizer spokeswoman, said. “As a result, there will be staffing changes within our U.S. commercial operations leading to some job loss at our Tampa, FL location,” Eisele said. “Pfizer does not take these changes lightly. All job-related decisions have and will be made with transparency, compassion and respect, and in compliance with applicable laws. A generous separation package will be offered to U.S. colleagues whose roles are [affected] and each will continue to have the opportunity to post for internal Pfizer roles.”
