Polling shows Floridians support for term limits is popular.
A poll conducted by U.S. Term Limits () found that 81% of Florida voters support term limits for County Commissioners. Now included with pursuing term limits for County Commissioners is putting limits on local School Board members.
A bill just doing that was sponsored by Fl State Rep. Michelle Salzman (R-Pensacola). It passed the House floor by a vote of 82-33. The language of the bill states that voters will be able to support term limits via a constitutional amendment on the states 2026 election ballot.
While Florida voters like term limits, some groups don’t. The Florida Association of Counties and the Small Counties Coalition are against the legislation. State Democrats didn’t support the measure and some Republicans are balking at the idea of supporting in the Florida Senate like State Sen. Erin Grall from Vero Beach.
And Grall may not be the only republican in opposition. Currently the term limits bill being proposed by State Sen. Blaise Ingoglia is stalled in the GOP run state senate.
Ingoglia says most voters in his district want the bill. Supports of Ingoglia’s term limits bill says it would allow new ideas that would improve local government without having to maintain the status quo by keeping around career politicians.
Opponents of term limits defend their position by claiming new people elected wouldn’t have the “the institutional knowledge of a current elected individual” and that would take time to learn.
Others say that all term limits would be increased the power Tallahassee lobbyist and state governmental staff giving them more control.
“Well, the first thing I would say is that about 80 percent of the voters want term limits, and they want it set at 8 years. And all we’re asking is to put it on the ballot. Let them answer the question,” said Sen. Ingoglia.
