A U.S. Postal Service delivery worker in central Florida was arrested and indicted for allegedly dumping mail in the woods. According to a new federal criminal complaint, the U.S. Mail contract postal worker indicted is Ottis McCoy Jr. He is accused of throwing 1,000 pieces of mail — including at least one mail-in ballot and 400 political mailings — into the woods Tuesday in Orange County instead of delivering the items just before the Nov. 5 election.

MoCoy raised suspicions when he returned from his route early. Surveillance footage was discovered that showed the alleged incident of mail being discarded. A postal service inspector opened an investigation and retrieved most of the discarded mail.
Orange County Supervisor of Elections Glen Gilzean expressed his gratitude for the swift response to the incident.

“It is extremely concerning to see vote-by-mail ballots on the ground,” Gilzean said. “We are, however, grateful for the prompt action taken by the United States Postal Service.“ He added that election officials are “fully committed to ensuring that every impacted Orange County voter receives their vote-by-mail ballot in time so that every voice can be heard in this historic election.“
