Former Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz is considering a bid for Florida governor in 2026, despite facing significant legal and ethical controversies.
Gaetz served Florida’s 1st congressional district from 2017 until his resignation in November 2024. His departure followed President-elect Donald Trump’s announcement to nominate him as U.S. attorney general. However, Gaetz withdrew from consideration due to resurfacing allegations of sexual misconduct, including claims of paying for sex with a 17-year-old and illegal drug use. Although the Department of Justice concluded its investigation without pressing charges, a House Ethics Committee report released in December 2024 found evidence supporting some of these allegations.
After stepping down from Congress, Gaetz launched “The Matt Gaetz Show” on One America News Network and joined Cameo, offering personalized videos for over $500 each.
In early 2025, Gaetz expressed interest in running for Florida governor in 2026, discussing his ambitions with Trump. He emphasized a pro-consumer agenda, particularly focusing on insurance reform.
Republican Primary Landscape
The Republican field for the 2026 gubernatorial race is becoming increasingly competitive. U.S. Representative Byron Donalds has officially declared his candidacy, receiving an endorsement from Trump . Casey DeSantis, Florida’s First Lady, is also reportedly considering a run, encouraged by major Republican donors.
Polling data indicates Gaetz trailing behind both Donalds and DeSantis. For instance, a May 2025 poll showed Donalds leading with 29%, DeSantis at 28%, and Gaetz at 10%.
While Gaetz remains a polarizing figure within the Republican Party, his potential candidacy adds complexity to the upcoming gubernatorial race. His political future will largely depend on public reception and the evolving dynamics of the Republican primary.
