While it may be their only top campaign issue for 2024, a new Gallup poll finds Democrats are rallying around the issue as they did in 2022.
Gallup says a record-high (32%) of U.S. voters say they would only vote for a candidate for major office who shares their views on abortion. That number is 8 points higher than 2020.
Gallup numbers show Americans’ support for abortion rights and identification as “pro-choice” are at historically high levels seen since the Dobbs decision from the Supreme Court in 2022.
“Yes, inflation, the border are top issues but so is the abortion issue and the GOP needs to get out in front it and define the democrat’s radical views on this issue,” says Florida GOP consultant Jamie Miller.
Even Gallup points out the abortion debate helped Democrats ‘blunt” Republicans’ anticipated gains in the 2022 midterm election and in 2024 appears to be an even greater advantage for the party today.
“On this issue, Democrats painted Republicans and this is what we saw happen. Republicans listening to the Consultant class running away from the abortion issued being told only to talk about inflation and Joe Biden and being out spent $391 million on ads to Republicans $11 million. The other side painted (Republicans)as extreme, when the real extreme opinion on this, is the other side that says abortion should be legal anytime.
“A majority of Americans identifying as pro-choice has become the new normal, and at the same time pro-choice voters are showing record intensity on the abortion issue,” said Gallup.
54% of voters say they identified themselves as pro-choice. In 2012, that number was 41% and in 2021 it was 49% in 2021. Voters saying they are pro-life is 41%, down from 2021 when it was 47%.
