This week, Gov. Ron DeSantis named Carlos Beruff and Jamie Shelton to the Citizens Property Insurance Corporation Board of Governors.
Beruff, the owner and CEO of Medallion Home Gulf Coast, clashed with DeSantis in a previous election cycle. Both Beruff and DeSantis ran for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate in 2016 after U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., announced he would not run for a second term. During the early stages of the campaign, Beruff and DeSantis exchanged shots. DeSantis tried to tie Beruff to former Gov. Charlie Crist who left the GOP in 2010 and joined the Democrats in 2014. Beruff’s team insisted DeSantis, then a congressman, was a typical Washington politician.
After losing the Republican presidential nomination contest to Donald Trump, Rubio announced he would run for a second term. DeSantis got out of the Senate race to run for a third term in Congress while Beruff continued his bid. He ended up taking 18 percent against Rubio in the Republican primary. In 2017, Beruff was named by then-Gov. Rick Scott to lead the Constitution Revision Commission.
Shelton is the president of bestbet Holdings and is on the board of Jacksonville University.
