The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive in Florida is this Saturday, May 11. Stamp Out Hunger is the nation’s largest single-day food drive of the year.
Stephen Shelley, the CEO of Farm Share, has put together a massive coalition of groups, including churches and local food banks, and now a partnership with the nation’s network of mail carriers, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC).
All of this is to combat food insecurity. Shelly says the food drive is organized by the NALC.
Here’s how it works and an opportunity for Floridians to get involved.
Participants are asked to put nonperishable food items in a bag with handles, canned goods etc. Place the bag by your mailbox. The mail carrier will get the bags to Farm Share, who will then distribute food to Floridians suffering from food insecurity in the local community.
“The food drive allows individuals to help feed their neighbors and communities without leaving their homes, facilitated by the support of local letter carriers,” said Shelley.
Farm Share reminds individuals that all donations collected in Florida will be distributed by Farm Share to Floridians in need.
Last year, Farm Share received and distributed 10 million pounds in donations to families throughout Florida.
Since becoming a partner in 2017, Farm Share has received and distributed nearly 39 million pounds in donations.
Looking ahead to hurricane season, Farm Share is distributing hurricane preparedness supplies in five locations across Florida on Saturday, June 15. This single-day event will provide hurricane supply kits to 5,000 families as Florida enters the Atlantic Hurricane Season.
In the aftermath of Hurricanes Ian and Idalia, Farm Share provided nearly 75 semi-trucks of food, water, and supplies within 14 days of the storms making landfall.
