Senator Ashley Moody easily secured the Republican Party nomination in the primary election, but she is already taking aim at her underdog opponent – Democratic socialist Angie Nixon.
“Angie Nixon and her comrades want to destroy this country, and everything that it is built on,” Moody said during her primary victory speech. “I belive that America is the greatest nation on earth.”
Nixon countered with a bold prediction:
“I’m looking forward to whooping you,” November she will call me Senator.”
Nixon’s upset of comparatively moderate Democrat Alex Vindman marks another notable victory for the coalition known as Democratic Socialists of America. Axios reports that Nixon is the first DSA member ever to win a major-party nomination for statewide office.
Nixon’s surprising win follows a string of notable DSA victories in Democratic congressional primaries, including Chris Rabb in Pennsylvania’s 3rd District, Claire Valdez in New York’s 7th, Darializa Avila Chevalier in New York’s 13th, Melat Kiros in Colorado’s 1st, and Donavan McKinney in Michigan’s 13th, along with primary wins by incumbent DSA member Rashida Tlaib in Michigan’s 12th. Nixon’s victory is particularly notable because it extends the DSA’s recent success beyond heavily Democratic congressional districts and into a statewide race in Florida, where she defeated the far better-funded Vindman 56% to 44
Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Joe Gruters released the following statement on the Florida Senate Race:
“Angie Nixon is an unhinged nut job who shouldn’t be anywhere near a position of power. Meanwhile, Senator Ashley Moody is delivering what Floridians actually care about: more money in families’ pockets, safer communities, and results that put Florida first.”
