Horror is the Favorite Movie Genre of Florida Residents, According to New Study

Millions of Americans enjoy trips to the movie theater to catch the latest film releases, as well as cozy movie nights at home.

To explore this phenomenon, the social casino website Hello Millions conducted a study to identify the most popular movie genres across the country based on Google search popularity. They analyzed the average number of monthly Google searches for various film genre-related terms—such as “thriller movies,” “new horror movies,” and “best comedy movies”—over the past 12 months to calculate their rankings.

In Florida, Horror emerged as the most popular movie genre, with an average of 216 Google searches per month for every 100,000 people. This genre particularly thrives during the fall months and around Halloween, capturing the attention of many Americans, although it can be polarizing for those who are too frightened to watch. Notable horror classics in the U.S. include The Exorcist, The Shining, Scream, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Following closely in second place was Comedy, which generated an average of 123 monthly searches per 100,000 people. Comedy films are often seen as feel-good experiences, though many viewers consider them guilty pleasures. Popular comedies that have won the hearts of critics and audiences alike include Barbie, The Big Lebowski, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and Mean Girls.

Romance ranked third, garnering an average of 82 searches per 100,000 people each month. Romance films tend to evoke strong emotions in viewers. American favorites include Titanic, When Harry Met Sally…, The Princess Bride, and Roman Holiday.

Fourth place went to Action, with an average of 81 monthly searches per 100,000 people. Major Hollywood blockbusters often fall into this genre, attracting audiences with their explosive stunts and fight scenes. Some of the most beloved action films include Die Hard, Kill Bill, Aliens, and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Completing the top five was Family, generating an average of 64 monthly searches per 100,000 people. Family films usually explore wholesome or inspiring themes meant to be enjoyed by both children and their parents. Popular family classics include Paddington, Mary Poppins, Harry Potter, and The Goonies.
