Study Shows Nearly 4 of 10 American Adults Haven’t Made a New Friend in Over a Year

Results from a recent study provide additional evidence of a cultural trend that many social scientists have observed for the past decade, commonly referred to as “The Loneliness Epidemic.”

The survey of 2,000 adults found that 39% haven’t made a new friend in over a year, and 37% feel that their social life is “Stuck in a rut.” Talker Research conducted the research for the company, CheapCarribean Vacations. Each survey participant had traveled with a friend in the past.

A majority of Americans surveyed said they miss their friends, with 76% expressing their wish to spend more quality time together.

Other key findings from the survey also revealed

  • 59% said it has been at least a year since they’ve gone to a concert with a friend.
  • 44% said it has been at least a year since they have been on vacation with a friend.
  • 38% haven’t gone to a party in at least six months.

According to respondents, the ideal vacation with friends would last an average of a week and would be filled with dinners out (58%) and beach days (48%). Immersing themselves in the environment is important for 47% who would make time to sightsee (47%) and embrace cultural experiences (31%).
