The AARP recently asked Floridians aged 45 and older about their top concerns regarding issues such as health, retirement, and owning a home.
HEALTH
Among the Floridians polled, 65% reported that prescription drug costs were among their top monthly expenses of concern.
CAREGIVING ISSUES
Among the Floridians polled, 58% are either currently providing care or have provided care in the past to an adult relative or friend.
HOMEOWNERSHIP
Most Floridians said homeowner’s insurance was a top concern followed by property taxes. Other polls that have been recently conducted in the state have also reported the same results.
The AARP survey found that 69% of people said their major factors driving them out of the current communities as they get older were because of their desire for disaster-resistant homes and lower overall housing costs.
The survey revealed that 74% of Florida residents have homeowners or renters’ insurance that would cover their losses in the event of a natural disaster. But 74% of those without a homeowners’ insurance plan said they didn’t have one because it was too expensive.
Sixty-three percent of respondents said they are also very concerned about being able to afford their homeowners or renters insurance.
Around 90% of Florida residents aged 45 and above said staying in their own home as they age is extremely or very important to them, and about 80% believe having affordable housing options in their community is extremely/very important.
SOCIAL SECURITY, RETIREMENT
58% do not believe their member of Congress is doing enough to protect Social Security for their retirement and for future generations.
When it came to a retirement plan provided by their company, 35% of Florida residents age 45+ report that their employer did not provide them with a way to save for retirement.
