Teen Drivers Pay $4,454 More for Car Insurance than 25-Year-Olds

Many drivers believe car insurance rates suddenly drop at age 25.

New data from CarInsurance.com shows the reality is far more dramatic — and starts much earlier.

The latest analysis of average car insurance rates by age found that an 18-year-old driver pays an average of $7,498 annually for full coverage, compared to $3,044 for a 25-year-old driver. That’s a difference of $4,454 per year.

Some notable findings:

An 18-year-old pays $7,498 annually on average; teen drivers pay more than four times what experienced middle-aged drivers pay.

By age 25, the average premium drops to $3,044.

Drivers generally see their lowest premiums between ages 30 and 60.

Rates continue declining until around age 60, when drivers see the lowest average premiums.

Teen drivers face the highest premiums. For instance, a 16-year-old pays an average of $10,387 annually for full coverage, over three times that of adult drivers.

Gender also affects your rate primarily in your 20s. Young men pay more, but the gap decreases by age 40 as drivers gain more experience.

Rates again increase after 70, but taking a defensive driving course or opting for a pay-per-mile policy can help offset age-related premium increases.

The findings highlight how strongly insurers weigh driving experience and risk, particularly for younger drivers who are just starting out on the road.
