The Cane Corso is the Most Popular Dog in Florida, Study Shows

The American Pet Products Association (APPA) has revealed that as of 2023, 66 percent of all American households own dogs, approximately 86.9 million homes.

With this in mind, Dog Advisory Council experts determined which breeds are top dogs in each state. Using the American Kennel Club‘s most popular breeds of 2022 list, the experts gathered Google search volume data to discover the top five most popular dogs in each US state.

The top five most popular dog breeds in Florida are:

1. Cane Corso – 90,500 monthly Google searches

2. French Bulldog – 74,000 monthly Google searches

3. Shiba Inu – 60,500 monthly Google searches

4. Golden Retriever – 60,500 monthly Google searches

5. Boxer – 60,500 monthly Google searches

The Cane Corso is the most Googled dog breed in 46 US states, including District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Connecticut, Idaho, and Kentucky. There are a massive 90,500 estimated Google searches for the breed per month in Florida. Cane Corsos are somewhat intimidating in appearance, with a large head and rippling muscles beneath their short dark coats. The Cane Corso’s Latin name roughly translates to ‘bodyguard dog,’ the perfect description for these incredibly protective and vigilant dogs. Despite this harsh exterior, Cane Corsos are affectionate with their family and eager to please them.

French Bulldogs come in second place with 74,000 estimated Google searches per month. French Bulldogs are incredibly affectionate and loving to their families. With a high adaptability level an innate eagerness to please, this breed is easy to train. French Bulldogs require very little grooming, making this a low maintenance breed to care for.

Shiba Inu is the third most popular dog breed in Florida, with 60,500 estimated monthly searches. The Shiba Inu is incredibly affectionate and vigilant, the perfect guard dog material in a family home.

Dr. Lizzie Youens, a veterinary surgeon, weighed in on the findings.

“This interesting research reveals huge interest in the Cane Corso breed. This striking breed has been rising in popularity across the US ever since it was first recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club in 2010. Loyal and loving, Cane Corsos can make excellent pets. However, they are large, intelligent, and very active dogs who need an experienced owner with the time to dedicate to training and exercise. These powerful dogs can weigh more than 100 pounds and can be highly assertive, so they are recommended for households with older children only if in a family setting,” she said.
