The History of Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, Florida

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, one of Florida’s premier theme parks, has a rich history dating back to its inception in 1959. Originally envisioned as a lush garden and brewery tour, the park was developed by Anheuser-Busch, the brewing company famous for Budweiser beer. Today, the park is owned by SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment.

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is a 300-acre park that blends entertainment and conservation. It started as a botanical garden with brewery tours and a few animal exhibits. The park introduced its first thrill ride, the Serengeti Railway, in 1965. The ride takes guests through the African plains, where they can see free-roaming animals. This marked the beginning of Busch Gardens’ transformation into a full-fledged theme park.

Throughout the following decades, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay continued to expand and diversify its attractions. In 1971, the park opened the Crown Colony House, a restaurant featuring panoramic views of the Serengeti Plain. This was followed by the addition of more animal exhibits, including the iconic Bird Gardens and Myombe Reserve, which showcased gorillas and other primates.

The 1980s and 1990s saw significant growth and development at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay. The park introduced several major roller coasters, including Python, Scorpion, and Kumba, solidifying its reputation as a destination for thrill-seekers.

In 1995, the park unveiled a new thrill ride, Montu, one of the tallest and fastest inverted roller coasters in the world at the time. In the early 21st century, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay continued to innovate with the addition of new attractions and experiences. SheiKra, a groundbreaking dive coaster, opened in 2005, featuring a 200-foot vertical drop and unparalleled thrills. The park also expanded its conservation efforts, partnering with various organizations to support wildlife conservation and research initiatives.

Today, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay remains a beloved destination for visitors of all ages, offering a unique blend of thrilling rides, immersive animal encounters, and beautiful gardens. With its rich history and ongoing commitment to entertainment and conservation, the park continues to captivate and inspire guests from around the world.
