Trump Vows to Rename Gulf of Mexico to ‘Gulf of America’

Earlier today, President-elect Trump told reporters that he wants to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. He expressed his belief that Mexico has been taking advantage of the United States in terms of trade and immigration.

“We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America,” Trump stated. “What a beautiful name! And it’s appropriate. Mexico has to stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country.”

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) announced that she would quickly introduce a bill to rename the Gulf of Mexico following Trump’s remarks. “President Trump’s second term is off to a great start,” she wrote on the social platform X. “I’ll be introducing legislation as soon as possible to officially change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to its rightful name, the Gulf of America!”

Trump made these comments while highlighting the large trade deficit the U.S. has with both Mexico and Canada. He has raised similar concerns since winning the election in November and has vowed to impose steep tariffs on both neighboring countries.

Both outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo have spoken with Trump in recent months regarding his tariff threats. On Tuesday, Trump described Mexico as a “very dangerous place” that is “essentially run by the cartels.”
