#5: Dueling Dragons Roller Coaster

When Islands of Adventure opened in May of 1999, one of the most creatively conceived attractions was the racer roller coaster: Dueling Dragons. Located in the park’s medieval-themed Lost Continent section, which is now home to Harry Potter rides and shops, the ride was notable for its innovative design as the first inverted dueling roller coaster in the world.

Designed by Bolliger & Mabillard. It featured two distinct tracks, Fire and Ice, representing two battling dragons. Each track offered unique layouts and inversions, allowing riders to experience different thrills depending on their choice.

Dueling Dragons was themed around a fierce rivalry between the two dragons, enhanced by an immersive queue winding through castle ruins and icy caverns. Riders encountered stunning theming elements like a flaming dragon skeleton and icy stalagmites, setting the stage for the dueling experience.

The coasters’ highlight was their near-miss elements, where the two trains appeared to come perilously close to colliding, providing adrenaline-pumping thrills. This effect was meticulously engineered, with the trains synchronized to meet at key points during the ride.

In 2010, as part of the park’s transformation to include the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Dueling Dragons was re-themed as Dragon Challenge, aligning with the Triwizard Tournament from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Despite its new identity, the ride retained its two-track design and thrilling near-misses.

Safety concerns and operational challenges led to the trains no longer “dueling” in 2011. The ride operated as two separate coasters until September 4, 2017, when it permanently closed to make way for a new attraction. As many new concepts have emerged and ride safety tech has vastly improved since 1999, it’s hard to imagine that Dueling Dragons couldn’t be restored to its former glory on a new plot of land.
