Universal Studios Florida History

When Did Universal Studios Florida Originally Open, and What Were the First Rides?

On June 7, 1990, Universal Studios Florida) celebrated its grand opening.

The origin of Universal Studios Florida can be traced back to innovative minds of film production, including Steven Spielberg and former Disney Imagineer Peter Alexander. They desired to expand their entertainment empire beyond traditional filmmaking and take inspiration from the success of Disneyland and Disney World. They envisioned a theme park that would bring the magic of cinema to life. With a prime location in Orlando, Florida, chosen for its thriving tourism industry, Universal Studios Florida began to take shape.

The original USF theme park was built for an estimated $630 million, with 50% ownership in the hands of MCA Universal and 50% belonging to The Rank Organisation leisure company. While owned by Seagram, MCA Universal would again partner with The Rank Group (corporate successor to The Rank Organisation) a decade later in a major $2.5 billion expansion that would transform the park into a resort.

Construction commenced in 1986, with Universal pouring extensive resources into the project to ensure an unparalleled guest experience. Drawing upon its vast vault of beloved films, Universal Studios Florida promised visitors the chance to step into the movies and immerse themselves in their favorite cinematic worlds. After four years of meticulous planning and development, the park finally opened its doors to the public in the summer of 1990, marking a milestone in the evolution of theme park entertainment.
