Which Grocery Stores Are the Cheapest in the Country?

Rising food and fuel costs remain top concerns for consumers, according to a recent Fox News poll, with grocery bills continuing to strain household budgets nationwide.

For shoppers looking to cut costs, a new analysis from Consumer Reports highlights which grocery chains offer the best value. Using Walmart as a baseline, researchers compared prices across 35 retailers to determine where consumers can find the lowest grocery bills.

The study found that only a handful of stores consistently beat Walmart on price.

Warehouse clubs topped the list. Costco ranked as the cheapest option overall, with prices averaging 21.4% lower than Walmart. Close behind was BJ’s Wholesale Club, offering prices about 21% lower.

Among traditional grocery chains, Lidl ranked third, with prices 8.5% below Walmart, followed by Aldi at 8.3% lower.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the report identified Whole Foods Market as the most expensive grocery retailer, with prices nearly 40% higher than Walmart. Shaw’s ranked second, with prices 31.9% higher, while El Rancho Supermercado came in third at 30.1% above Walmart’s pricing.

Meanwhile, Trader Joe‘s ranked 10th most expensive in the analysis, with prices averaging 24.6% higher than Walmart.

The findings underscore how much prices can vary between retailers, offering consumers potential savings opportunities as they navigate persistently high grocery costs.
