Will Florida Congressional Republicans Partner With Democrats to Support Debt Ceiling Increase?

Last week, Florida Republicans huddled up at Trump National Doral in South Florida to discuss the possibility of working across the aisle with Democrats to increase the debt ceiling.

The GOP barely holds a majority in Congress, and the House speaker, Mike Johnson, said they may have to work with Democrats to pass some of President Trump’s policies in the new year.

In February, Republicans will face a deadline to keep the government running and, by this summer, will have to decide if they plan to raise the debt limit, which they have criticized Democrats in the past for doing the same thing.

President Trump supports eliminating the debt limit to pass some of his spending bills. The question remains: will more fascial conservative members of the GOP House go along?

In December of last year, then-President-elect Trump supported a bill that would increase government spending by suspending the debt ceiling. Some democrats even praised Trump, but over thirty-plus Republicans bucked him and the party leadership on the measure by voting against it, but it still passed with Democrat support.

Several Republicans want to see massive cuts in federal programs, but that may not happen because some may not go against the wishes of President Trump, who supports raising the debt ceiling. “Conservatives who have never supported a debt limit hike and are not inclined to now,” reported the Hill.com.

Some conservative pundits have criticized the GOP for going along with Democrats. In 2023, members of the GOP House went along with an ousted then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who compromised with democrats on spending, which is exactly what some accuse Mike Johnson of doing currently.
