Car rental comparison company Discover Cars has analyzed the latest data to determine which car models are most popular in the US, along with expert commentary.
Discover Cars says the most popular car models in the country are not only what consumers want to purchase, but also what they are looking to rent when vacationing.
The most popular car across all age groups is the Honda Civic, with 69% of Americans holding a favorable opinion of it ,and 95% of Americans having heard of it. It’s followed by the Toyota Camry, which is liked by 67% but heard of by 96%. In third place, 67% of Americans like the Chevrolet Corvette, and 97% have heard of this model.
There were some generational differences in the data. Millennials’ favorite car is the Ford Mustang, with 68% saying they like this model. The top car for Gen X is a Honda Civic, which is liked by 69% of this generation. For Baby Boomers, a Toyota Corolla comes out top, with 66% saying they like this car.
Both men and women choose the Honda Civic as their favorite car, as it’s liked by 73% of men (with 96% having heard of it) and 66% of women (with 95% having heard of it).
The car with the lowest popularity rating was the Hyundai Veloster, which 65% of Americans have heard of, but only 22% have a positive opinion of.
“It’s interesting to see the Honda Civic come out on top. In our study last summer of our own data, we found that the most popular models of car to rent with us were typically compact city cars,” said Aleksandrs Buraks, Head of Growth at Discover Cars.
The second most popular model of car among American women is the Ford Mustang, and among American men, the second most popular model is the Toyota Corolla. Sports cars have something of a stereotypically masculine reputation, so it’s interesting to see that this sporty model is so popular among women, with men opting for the Toyota Corolla, which is, like the Civic, a compact sedan.
