At the end of last week, U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz, R-Fla., announced the federal government is sending $25 million to five higher education institutions in his district which stretches along the Atlantic Coast from St. Johns County down to Volusia County.
The funds come from the “Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act” which Congress and the White House agreed upon at the end of last month to help the nation recover from the coronavirus pandemic. As part of the stimulus package, almost $14 billion will head to colleges and universities.
“Every college student deserves a shot at a great education but unfortunately, the coronavirus pandemic has threatened to end many of these students’ dreams,” Waltz said on Friday. “I am glad to see these grants for our colleges and universities and hope they will keep those students on the path to success in their academic careers.”
“Approximately $12.5 million of the funding received by colleges and universities in Florida’s Sixth District must be used for cash grants, which are provided directly to students to help pay for expenses related to disruptions to their educations due to the COVID-19 outbreak, including course materials and technology as well as food, housing, health care and childcare,” the congressman’s office noted.
Daytona State College will get $7,681,731 while Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University will receive $6,845,716. Bethune-Cookman University will get $6,648,501 and Stetson University is penciled in for $3,578,583. Daytona College will receive $301,333.
