New Poll Shows 80% of Voters Don’t Think Trump’s VP Choice Matters

A poll known for right-leaning sample audiences revealed recent poll numbers that show 80% of voters surveyed said that they don’t think Trump’s choice for vice president matters.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 80% of Likely U.S. voters say Trump’s choice of a vice-presidential running mate won’t make much difference in whether they would vote for the Republican. Only 13% think Trump’s VP pick would matter.

Other notable results from the poll include:

  • Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is the favorite choice to be Trump’s VP, with 15% of voters saying Trump should pick DeSantis.
  • South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott and former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Dr. Ben Carson are each the favorite of 11%.
  • Businessman Vivek Ramaswamy and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum are each favored by seven percent 7%) of voters.
  • Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance and Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders with 5% each
  • Florida Rep. Byron Donalds with three percent (3%).
  • Eighteen percent say Trump should choose another candidate as his running mate, and another 18% are unsure.

The survey of 1,117 U.S. Likely Voters was conducted on June 23-24, 2024 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.

This survey features some different names than our poll in March about possible Trump VP picks, adding the names of Carson, Burgum and Sanders. Among Republican voters, DeSantis (23%) is the clear favorite, followed by Scott (14%) and Carson (10%). Among independents – voters not affiliated with either major party – DeSantis and Carson are tied at 12%, with Scott at 11%.
