A new U.S. Foreclosure Market Report by online real estate and property data provider ATTOM, shows Florida is the top state in the country with the most home foreclosures.
In the first 6 months of 2026, U.S. properties with foreclosure filings — default notices, scheduled auctions or bank repossessions were up 21% higher compared to the same time last year.
The cities with the highest foreclosure rates here in Florida were Punta Gorda, Lakeland, Cape Coral, Jacksonville and Ocala.
Florida Daily economic analyst Steve Beaman says there’s still much uncertainty about the housing market in the U.S. economy.
“We’ve seen some layoffs from AI,” said Beaman. “The war In Iran is causing a lot of mixed signals on where the economy and the housing market will go next. And things haven’t gotten much better for real estate coming out of COVID.”
“Foreclosure activity continued to increase in the first half of 2026, but the broader picture remains one of a market that is gradually returning to more typical patterns,” said Rob Barber, CEO at ATTOM. “The combination of rising foreclosure starts, increased foreclosure completions, and shorter timelines points to a continued normalization of the foreclosure process, although the increases also suggest that some homeowners may be facing greater financial strain than they were a year ago.”
