A Dozen Florida Republicans Back Proposal to Block Iran From Accessing $6 Billion

A dozen Florida Republicans in the U.S. House are backing U.S. Rep. August Pfluger’s, R-Texas, to “block Iran, the largest state-sponsor of terror, from accessing the $6 billion in funds that the Biden administration unfroze on September 11, 2023.”

Pfluger had more than 100 backers, including Florida Republican U.S. Reps. Aaron Bean, Gus Bilirakis, Vern Buchanan, Kat Cammack, Byron Donalds, Scott Franklin, Carlos Gimenez, John Rutherford, Maria Elvira Salazar, Greg Steube, Michael Waltz and Dan Webster.

“A month ago on the anniversary of 9/11, the Biden administration unfroze $6 billion and made it available to Iran—the world’s largest state sponsor of terror—while Iran was helping Hamas plan the horrific terror attacks on Israel,” said Pfluger. “This $6 billion will be used to backfill the money that Iran is paying to Hamas if we don’t act. The administration’s supposed ‘quiet understanding’ with Qatar, also a host country of Hamas, is a disaster waiting to happen. Since the administration refuses to permanently freeze the funds, Congress will.”

“Iran cannot be trusted,” said Webster. “As the world’s largest state-sponsor of terrorism, Iran is a proven opponent of U.S. interests, international security, and universal values of liberty. While the Biden administration claims to have a ‘quiet understanding’ with Qatar to prevent the release of these funds, Congress must take action to ensure Iran never has access to these funds.”
