Gov. Ron DeSantis announced that Florida has awarded more than 9,400 recruitment bonuses to newly hired law enforcement officers through the state’s Law Enforcement Recruitment Bonus Payment Program. The latest round of awards went to officers serving in the Florida Panhandle, including Bay, Franklin, Gulf, and Walton counties, while an additional 734 bonuses were distributed statewide.
Launched in 2022, the program provides a one-time $5,000 bonus—after taxes—to newly employed officers. The initiative aims to recognize new recruits and strengthen Florida’s reputation as one of the most law enforcement–friendly states in the country.
“Today in Panama City, we welcomed new law enforcement recruits from Bay, Franklin, Gulf, and Walton counties and awarded them $5,000 recruitment bonuses,” said Governor DeSantis. “Many new officers across the state moved to Florida from soft-on-crime jurisdictions, where prosecutors allow crime to run rampant and local politicians denigrate law enforcement. Here in Florida, law enforcement officers are supported and appreciated—and criminals are held accountable.”
Since the program’s launch, more than 1,900 officers from 49 states and two U.S. territories have relocated to Florida, including over 600 from California, Illinois, and New York. To date, the state has distributed more than $63 million in recruitment bonuses.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to make Florida the nation’s leading law-and-order state. In the Fiscal Year 2025–26 budget, the Governor secured $49 million in pay increases for more than 16,200 state-sworn officers, raised the minimum base pay to $60,000, and implemented significant raises for both entry-level and veteran officers.
Florida has also expanded wellness and training resources, strengthened penalties for crimes committed against officers, and launched new education programs in high schools to prepare future law enforcement professionals. The Florida Law Enforcement Academy Scholarship Program additionally covers training costs for recruits entering the field.
In addition to the $5,000 recruitment bonus, officers employed in Florida receive competitive pay, strong health and retirement benefits, student loan forgiveness options, home loan programs, and other incentives designed to promote financial and career stability.
