Ron DeSantis Proposes Property Tax Relief Plan for Florida Homeowners

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has proposed a plan to provide property tax relief to homeowners across the state, including rebate checks averaging $1,000 for each homesteaded property. If approved by the Legislature, the rebates would be issued in December 2025 and apply to state-mandated school property taxes.

According to Governor DeSantis’ Office, the proposal would benefit more than 5.1 million homesteaded properties and is intended to ease financial pressure on Florida residents while maintaining full funding for school districts.

“Constitutional protections for Florida homeowners require approval of the voters in 2026,” DeSantis said during the announcement. “In the meantime, Floridians need relief.”

The initiative aligns with DeSantis’s broader goal of eventually eliminating property taxes in Florida through a constitutional amendment. He urged lawmakers to act during the current legislative session to authorize the rebate program, citing the state’s strong financial position as a way to fund the relief without impacting education budgets.

The Florida Legislature has not yet formally responded to the proposal.
