Federal Worker Cuts Could Impact Hillsborough the Most Out of All Florida Counties

A new report from the Tampa Bay Business Journal revealed that Hillsborough County is home to more than 60% of federal workers who reside in Florida.

According to USASpending.gov, the Tampa Bay area receives over $66 billion in federal funding, with Hillsborough County accounting for about $38 billion—nearly 60%. This results in a per-capita allocation of $25,994, the highest among local counties.

Hillsborough also has more than 17,000 of the nearly 30,000 federal employees in the region, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The local federal workforce earns a combined $765 million annually, with average salaries of $71,644 in Manatee County and $95,605 in Hillsborough County.

In comparison, Pinellas County has about 10,000 fewer federal employees but still contributes over $200 million in combined annual wages.
