Florida’s roofing industry is facing increasing uncertainty as discussions emerge over limiting the use of asphalt shingles while incentivizing metal roofs. Proponents argue that alternative materials may provide long-term durability, but industry leaders warn that such policies could hurt homeowners and would-be homebuyers by limiting affordable options.
“Lawmakers are looking to restrict affordable roofing and incentivize more expensive materials, but this will have a negative impact on consumers,” said Reed Hitchcock, Executive Vice President of the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association. “In reality, this will restrict consumer choice and drive costs up for taxpayers.”
Asphalt shingles remain the most widely used roofing material in Florida, covering approximately 70% to 75% of homes. However, misinformation has fueled questions about their effectiveness, with some arguing that asphalt is less durable than other materials.
In reality, modern asphalt shingles are designed to meet strict wind, hail, and fire resistance standards, making them a resilient and cost-effective option for homeowners. Many of the problems that critics attribute to asphalt shingles actually stem from poor installation or older roofs that predate Florida’s modern building codes, rather than a flaw in the material itself.
Rather than restricting certain materials, industry experts emphasize the need for a performance-based approach that strengthens roofing standards across the board.
“We have been at the forefront of moving the building code forward to make more resilient roofing materials,” said Mike Silvers of the Florida Roofing and Sheet Metal Contractors Association, emphasizing that consumers should be the ones to make the best choice for their individual needs. “Every roofing material has pros and cons, and there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach.”
Despite discussions over potential policy shifts, asphalt shingles continue to be the most accessible, affordable, and widely available roofing solution for Florida homeowners. Industry leaders are urging policymakers to focus on smart, evidence-based regulations rather than policies that could unfairly limit homeowner choice.
