TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Four defendants have been arrested and charged in connection with an interstate drug trafficking operation accused of transporting approximately 60 kilograms of cocaine from El Paso, Texas, into the Tampa Bay area, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced.
The defendants were identified as Daniel Cruz Pinales, Arturo Carlos, Joaquin Enriquez and Jesus Guadalupe Chan Morales. Each faces charges of trafficking in cocaine and conspiracy.
“This operation dismantled a dangerous cartel pipeline flooding Florida communities with cocaine,” Uthmeier said. “Thanks to the outstanding work of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, FDLE, and our statewide prosecutors, we have removed 60 kilograms of poison from our streets and are holding these traffickers fully accountable.”
According to the Attorney General’s Office, Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office detectives began conducting surveillance on a suspected drug trafficking organization on July 11. Investigators worked with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement through the State Assistance for Fentanyl Eradication program.
Authorities said investigators identified a monthly supply pattern involving white Freightliner semi-trucks. Two alleged members of the organization were observed retrieving bags from the trucks in Wesley Chapel before transporting them in a chase vehicle to a planned handoff with Pinales in a Tampa parking lot.
Investigators later stopped Pinales and discovered three suitcases containing an estimated 60 kilograms, or about 132 pounds, of suspected cocaine, according to the Attorney General’s Office. The substance reportedly tested positive for cocaine during a field test.
Enriquez, Morales and Carlos were also taken into custody without incident.
The defendants are charged with trafficking between 400 grams and 150 kilograms of cocaine, along with conspiracy. If convicted under the current charges, they face a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in the Florida Department of Corrections.
Authorities said the investigation remains active and that additional arrests and charges are expected.
Senior Assistant Statewide Prosecutor Ryan Shaw is prosecuting the case in Florida’s Sixth and Thirteenth Judicial Circuits. The charges are allegations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
