“This is just another drop in the bucket for the United Nations’ failure to uphold the fundamental values of human rights,” Steube said when he introduced the resolution. “The Chinese Communist Party openly violates freedoms of belief, expression and privacy and now the United Nations expects them to prosecute the violations they themselves perpetuate - this dishonest attempt to excuse China’s abhorrent behavior should have us all rethinking our decision to fund this organization.”

Greg Steube Offers Resolution Condemning China Being Named to UN’s Human Rights Council

A Florida congressman has introduced a resolution condemning China being named to the United Nations’ Human Rights Council.

At the end of last week, U.S. Rep. Greg Steube, R-Fla., introduced the resolution.

“This is just another drop in the bucket for the United Nations’ failure to uphold the fundamental values of human rights,” Steube said when he introduced the resolution. “The Chinese Communist Party openly violates freedoms of belief, expression and privacy and now the United Nations expects them to prosecute the violations they themselves perpetuate – this dishonest attempt to excuse China’s abhorrent behavior should have us all rethinking our decision to fund this organization.”

The Florida Republican’s office highlighted some of the reasons why Steube introduced the resolution.

“The Department of State highlighted China for engaging in some of the worst human rights violations in its 2018 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices,” Steube’s office noted. “This resolution aims to hold China and the United Nations accountable for human rights violations and demands serious reform to the United Nations if the United States is to continue to participate and provide funding. The United Nations’ decision follows questions raised over Chinese President Xi Jinping’s early response to the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Steube’s resolution was sent to the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee at the end of last week. So far, he has not reeled in any cosponsors.
