Rutherford easily won the Republican primary on Tuesday night. With more than 95 percent of the vote counted, Rutherford won 65.7 percent of the vote while Mara Macie took 17.6 percent and Luna Lopez got 16.7 percent of the vote.

A longtime law enforcement officer, Rutherford served three terms as sheriff of Duval County before running for Congress in 2016 when U.S. Rep. Ander Crenshaw, R-Fla., announced his retirement.

With no opposition in November, Rutherford will retain his seat and serve another two years in the U.S. House.

Rutherford serves on the U.S. House Appropriations Committee.
