The Trump White House and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) had proposed cuts to the National Park Service.

They are considering cuts of around $1.2 billion out of $4.8 billion and a reduction in workers by 1,500 jobs nationwide.

A liberal group called More Perfect Union is putting up billboards in Florida arguing against the proposed cuts. One of the billboards will be seen in Jacksonville,

In a press release the group says they are highlighting the fact that Elon Musk and the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has cut resources from one of our nation’s most treasured assets the country highlighting the fact that Elon Musk and the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has cut resources from one of our nation’s most treasured assets.

“National Parks are some of our nation’s most cherished resources, but some elected officials and unelected billionaires would rather privatize or eliminate our public services, we believe strongly in the need for great public parks and outdoor spaces that all Americans can enjoy,” said Faiz Shakir, Executive Director of More Perfect Union.

Shakir, also serves as a chief political advisor to Senator Bernie Sanders and has worked with left-wing groups like the ACLU, the Center for American Progress and Think Progress.

Trump officials have made it known they prefer to see more local control over national parks and less coming from the federal government. DOGE didn’t give specifics but maintained they found wasteful spending from the Biden administration on some construction sites that could be better served on the local level.

The White House says many projects that receive national recreation and preservation grants are “not directly tied to maintaining national parks or public lands, which have a large backlog of maintenance and are more important to address than community recreation initiatives.”

In 2024, Pew Research found that 76% of Americans love national parks and view theM in a positive light.
