On Thursday, Gov. Ron DeSantis, the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) announced they would end the Florida Crystals Lease for the stormwater treatment area (STA) component of the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA) Reservoir Project.
The governor’s office offered some of the reasons behind the early termination of the agreement. Florida Crystals agreed to the early termination.
“On Monday, September 30th, the Florida Crystals Corporation sent a letter voluntarily terminating its lease on lands needed to expedite completion of the EAA Reservoir Project. The termination of this lease on the STA footprint is an important step as it is critical for the necessary access for site preparation and will allow the District to meet its expected construction schedule,” the governor’s office noted.
“Less than 48 hours after taking office, I charged the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and South Florida Water Management District with expediting critical Everglades restoration projects because we cannot afford to wait,” said DeSantis on Thursday. “Today’s news is an important step forward in expediting construction of the EAA Reservoir Project and reducing the harmful discharges hurting our coastal estuaries. The EAA Reservoir Project will continue to be a top priority of my administration.”
“Getting the EAA Reservoir Project built and operational is a top priority, and this termination means we can continue to expedite this critical project,” said SFWMD Executive Director Drew Bartlett. “Thanks to Governor DeSantis and the Florida Legislature, construction of the STA is fully funded. The important STA component of the EAA Reservoir Project will treat and send more clean water south to the Everglades. We look forward to working closely with the Corps to expedite federal permits so we can immediately begin site preparation work.”
Bartlett will be front and center next week with plans to review the termination later at the District’s Governing Board at a Governing Board meeting open to the public.
“In June and August, the District applied for permits from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the STA component of the EAA Reservoir Project. Once issued, site preparations for the STA component will begin immediately. District officials are actively working to do whatever is necessary to expedite permitting from the Corps,” the governor’s office noted.
“Governor DeSantis made Everglades restoration a key part of his environmental agenda,” said DEP Secretary Noah Valenstein. “The Department will continue to work closely with the water management district to expedite and advance Everglades restoration projects and aggressively protect our natural resources and improve our water quality.”
“The EAA Reservoir Project is a joint Everglades restoration project between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and SFWMD. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will construct the storage reservoir and the District will construct the water-cleansing STA. SFWMD is already conducting geotechnical work on the project site and will begin site preparations as soon as the permits for the project are approved by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ stated schedule for reservoir construction is not impeded by any leases.
A small portion of the project site not necessary for immediate site preparation is owned by the State of Florida. State officials are actively working to ensure there are no obstacles to the District’s expedited construction schedule,” the governor’s office noted.
