The percentage of people who reported losing money to fraud jumped from 27% in 2023 to 38% in 2024.
According to Webshare, a company that manages online privacy, AI voice cloning, fake delivery texts, social media prize traps, fake security emails, and gift card payment demands are the top scams hitting consumers in the back pocket.
1. Your Grandson’s Voice Asking for Help Isn’t Really Him
Scammers use AI to copy voices from social media videos. They call, pretending to be a family member in trouble, and ask for money. If someone calls for emergency money, ask them something only the real person would know.
2. “Click Here to Reschedule Delivery” – Don’t Do It
Fake texts about missed deliveries appear to be real but steal your information when you click. Always check deliveries by opening the real company app yourself, not through text links.
3. Free Money on Facebook? It’s Always a Scam
Fake posts promise prizes or money from stores and celebrities to steal your personal details. Real giveaways never ask for passwords, bank details, or fees to claim prizes.4. “Someone Tried to Access Your Account” – And Now They Did
Fake security emails appear to be real, but actually steal your password when you click on their links. Never click links in security emails – go directly to the company website instead.
5. “Buy Amazon Cards to Fix This Problem” – It’s Always a Scam
Scammers study your shopping habits and target you with gift card requests from stores you use, especially during busy shopping seasons. Once you share the card codes, they are instantly redeemed, and your money is gone forever.
“AI is changing how scammers operate, making their attacks more personal and harder to spot. They use tools to mimic voices, create fake videos, or send messages that seem to come from trusted contacts. It’s now easier than ever to fall for a scam, whether it’s a text from a friend asking for help or a gift card offer from a favorite store,” said Justas B., Head of Marketing at Webshare.
