Universal Explores Elon Musk’s Boring Company Tunnel Linking Epic Universe and Universal Studios Florida

Universal Orlando Resort is exploring the possibility of an underground transportation system that could link its new Epic Universe theme park with Universal Studios Florida, with Elon Musk’s tunneling venture, The Boring Company, emerging as a potential partner in the project. Recent reporting indicates the Musk-owned firm has been tapped to dig tunnels connecting the resort’s parks, a move that could significantly reshape how visitors travel across the sprawling Central Florida destination.

The concept builds on Universal’s broader effort to create a point-to-point transit network between Epic Universe—located several miles south of the existing parks—and the core Universal Orlando campus. Bid documents released through a local development district show the company is seeking proposals to design, build, operate, and maintain a long-term transportation system that could include underground tunnels, marking one of the first concrete steps toward a long-rumored subterranean link.

While enthusiasm around the idea is growing, the project remains in a developing stage. Reports suggest the underground connection is still part of planning discussions rather than a finalized construction effort, even as industry observers note Universal’s push to improve guest mobility across its expanding resort footprint. Earlier speculation had circulated for months that Musk’s company might pursue an Orlando tunnel similar to its Las Vegas “Loop” system, underscoring the long-running nature of the concept.

Any partnership would also arrive amid heightened scrutiny of The Boring Company’s existing tunnel operations elsewhere. Lawmakers in Nevada have raised workplace safety and environmental concerns tied to the Las Vegas Loop, where complaints and fines have been reported even as the system remains popular with convention visitors and continues expanding. For Universal and Central Florida officials, the balance between innovation, safety, and large-scale infrastructure investment could ultimately determine whether a tunnel linking Epic Universe and Universal Studios Florida becomes reality.
