A 31-year-old woman died Sunday afternoon after she was bitten by an alligator while swimming in the Econlockhatchee River near the Barr Street Trailhead in Little Big Econ State Forest, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
FWC officials said Seminole County deputies responded to reports of the attack at about 1:30 p.m. near the Barr Street Trailhead. Investigators said the woman, whose name has not been released, was swimming in the river when she was attacked.
The woman was taken to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries, according to FWC.
A contracted alligator trapper was called to the scene, and FWC said the investigation remains ongoing.
The Seminole County Sheriff’s Office closed access to the Barr Street Trailhead while deputies assisted FWC at the scene.

The Seminole County attack marked the third incident in seven days, including an attack in Marion County, where a boy was fishing from the shore at Nelson’s Fish Camp in Marion County when an 8-foot-7 alligator bit the victim on the hand. FWC said the victim is not from Florida and was fishing with his dad at the time of the incident.
The alligator was subsequently killed after the incident, the FWC says.
