WASHINGTON D.C.- Build American AI (BAAI), a 501 (c)(4) non-profit dedicated to advancing U.S. leadership in transformative technologies, has released a comprehensive public report dismantling thenarrative that artificial intelligence will destroy high-skilled human labor.
Titled “AI, Radiology, and the Future of Jobs,” the report uses a decade of real world data to prove that due to AI, the field of radiology has experienced unprecedented growth and gained more responsibility.
Key findings include:
- The number of radiologists in U.S. Medicare-affiliated practices grew from 30,723 in 2014 to 36,024 in 2023 – a 17.3 percent increase precisely during the window AI was supposed to displace them
- At the Mayo Clinic the radiology staff expanded by 55 percent since 2016, now exceeding 400 physicians
- Diagnostic radiology residency positions offered rose from 990 in 2020 to 1,017 in 2024, achieving an all-time high fill rate of 1,016.
- Radiology has become the single largest clinical use case for artificial intelligence, accounting for 723 out of 950 FDA-authorized AI/ML medical devices through 2024.
In November 2016 Geoffery Hinton, a decorated figure in artificial intelligence, declared that medical schools should “stop training radiologists now”. He argued that in five years, AI would supersede the skills of any human. A decade later, this report proves otherwise.
Far from driving staff reductions, live hospital deployments show that AI is driving immense downstream clinical efficiency and saving patient lives. Northwestern Medicine found that using generative AI tools boosted radiographic documentation efficiency by 15.5 percent with zero loss in clinical accuracy. Cedars-Sinai uses an AI- assisted worklist triage system for pulmonary embolism which slashed hospital lengths of stay by 26.3 percent.
Build American AI advises not to fear AI but to prepare the American workforce to use the technology effectively. The experience of radiology shows that workers succeed when they are given the tools.
