A new survey conducted by tech research firm Lightyear highlights a workforce that is increasingly adopting artificial intelligence while also facing rising concerns about job security. The study, which surveyed 1,000 U.S. workers, illustrates the transitional nature of the economy as AI transforms various industries.

The report indicates that 35% of workers use AI tools every day, with the number being even higher among younger employees. Notably, 53% of Gen Z respondents rely on AI on a daily basis. These findings highlight the rapid integration of AI into routine work tasks across various sectors.
The enthusiasm for AI’s capabilities is tempered by deep concerns over its impact on employment. Seventy percent of surveyed workers fear AI will harm the job market, while 49% say they feel stressed about being replaced by automation and AI-powered tools.
“Workers are both optimistic and deeply anxious,” the report notes. “While AI offers unprecedented efficiency, many employees feel unprepared for the pace of change.”
One of the most striking findings of the study is the existence of a “readiness gap.” Only 10% of workers are actively upskilling to remain competitive in an AI-driven economy. The data indicates that while the adoption of AI technologies is high, many workers either lack access to training or are uncertain about how to leverage AI for career advancement.

Interestingly, Gen Z employees are notably proactive in investing in AI skills. The survey revealed that 67% of Gen Z respondents are actively learning about AI, and 44% have reported receiving promotions, raises, or new opportunities as a direct result of their AI knowledge. The report concludes, “Gen Z is treating AI like a career accelerant. They’re not just using AI—they’re leveraging it to gain an edge.”

Lightyear’s findings highlight a paradox in the modern workplace: AI serves as both a powerful productivity tool and a significant source of anxiety. As automation continues to accelerate, companies and workers face increasing pressure to adapt through training, education, and policy reforms. The full study, titled ChatGPT Nation: The States Leading and Ignoring the AI Boom, is available on Lightyear’s website.
