Drivers in Central Florida will notice a slight increase in toll rates today as the Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) implements a toll hike ranging from 2 to 5 cents. The authority states that the increase is necessary to support the region’s critical infrastructure needs.
The additional revenue will be allocated toward maintaining and operating the expressway system, as well as funding CFX’s newly approved five-year work plan, which includes road construction and improvement projects aimed at keeping pace with regional growth.
To help ease the impact on commuters, CFX is also bringing back a cost-saving initiative. The reinstated program offers E-PASS customers who frequently use the toll roads a 25% discount, providing some relief for regular drivers amid the price adjustments.
CFX traces its origins back to the Orlando–Orange County Expressway Authority (OOCEA), founded in the 1960s to build the Bee Line Expressway and later the East–West Expressway. In 2014, OOCEA was expanded and reorganized into CFX under state legislation, with jurisdiction expanded to include Brevard, Lake, Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties. In 2018, CFX absorbed the Osceola County Expressway Authority (OCX), consolidating toll collection and management under one regional entity.
Today, CFX oversees approximately 125 centerline miles of toll roads—including SR 408, 414, 417, 429, 451, 453, 528, and 538—handling more than 1.6 million daily toll transactions, most of which are electronic via its E‑PASS system. The agency has been a pioneer in open-road tolling and interoperability, accepting E‑PASS across multiple state systems and offering its Uni transponder for E‑ZPass users.
