For frugal travelers, the news of Spirit Airlines’ collapse spurred concerns about affordable air travel in the future. This week, three airlines announced their intention to fill part of the void in Florida’s most popular tourist destinations.
In Tennessee, Frontier Airlines, which once attempted to merge with Spirit, announced it will add a Memphis-to-Orlando flight on July 5, from Memphis International Airport (MEM) to Orlando International Airport (MCO). According to a statement from MEM, the service is set to take flight three times weekly, then twice weekly after that date.
According to a report in the Orlando Business Journal and Atlantic City, New Jersey’s tourism department, Breeze Airways will start offering flights from Orlando International Airport to Atlantic City, New Jersey in July, and Avianca Airlines expanded its Orlando-to-Medellin, Columbia route to year-round daily service, with the starting day to be announced in the future.
Breeze Airways announced the new nonstop Orlando-to-Atlantic City route as part of a broader expansion at Atlantic City International Airport. The airline said the daily nonstop service between Orlando and Atlantic City will begin July 3, with introductory one-way fares starting at $89.
The budget carrier also announced additional nonstop routes from Atlantic City to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Fort Myers, Florida; and West Palm Beach, Florida later this year. Breeze officials said the expansion more than doubles the number of nonstop destinations the airline will offer from Atlantic City since first announcing service there in January.
Atlantic City International Airport officials said the added routes help preserve affordable travel options and maintain service to key destinations following the shutdown of Spirit Airlines, a major discount carrier in the Florida market.
“We appreciate Breeze Airways for its investment in Atlantic City International Airport and its introduction of new routes that maintain service to key destinations serving our region,” said Stephen F. Dougherty, executive director of the South Jersey Transportation Authority, which operates the airport. “The timely launch of this service reflects the strength of the market and helps ensure passengers continue to have access to convenient, affordable destinations.”
Breeze Airways is also expanding its footprint at Tampa International Airport with two additional leisure-focused routes, including a new international destination. Beginning Dec. 19, the airline plans to launch nonstop service between Tampa and Cancun, Mexico, with flights operating Wednesdays and Saturdays. Breeze will also begin nonstop flights to Saint Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands starting Dec. 16, with service scheduled twice weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
The airline said the added routes are part of its continued expansion across Florida following the shutdown of Spirit Airlines, which had previously served many budget-conscious travelers in the state.
The airline has received several recent industry recognitions, including being named to the TIME100 Most Influential Companies list for 2026 and being recognized by the Airline Passenger Experience Association as Best Major Airline in North America.
