Most Americans support photo ID for voting by overwhelming margins.
A Pew Research survey broke down the numbers by political affiliation and demographics.
In support:
95% of Republicans
71% of Democrats
82% of Hispanic Americans
76% of Black Americans
83% of Americans support requiring proof of citizenship when registering to vote for the first time.
Yet even with the high support from Democrats, every Democrat Congressional member from Florida voted against The Save Act, which recently passed the U.S House 223–206
The bill says that before any individual may vote, they must present proof of a valid ID, such as a certified birth certificate or a passport.
Democrats oppose it because it requires photo identification to vote.
Democrats have labeled the bill as “Voter suppression” or “Jim Crow 2.0.” Florida Congressman Maxwell Frost called it a “Project of authoritarian fascism.”
Now Republicans are looking to pick up some Democratic seats when the state legislature meets for special session on the issue of redistricting in April.
Two of the districts they are targeting for the 2026 midterms are South Florida Democrats Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Jared Moskowitz.
On social media, President Trump has posted that the Save Act legislation is his “No. 1 priority” ahead of the midterm elections and has encouraged Senate Republicans to force Democrats into a talking filibuster.
Under that approach, senators trying to block the bill would be required to continuously hold the floor and debate the measure to keep it from advancing. The modern filibuster allows senators to stop legislation without sustained floor speeches, meaning bills can stall without extended debate.
Florida’s upcoming congressional redistricting could threaten safe Democratic seats.
Florida GOP state legislators have already passed their own version called the Florida “SAVE Act.”
