Last week, from her perch on the U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, D-Fla., announced almost $229 million in federal funds is coming to South Florida to help airports in the region.
Mucarsel-Powell announced the U.S. Department of Transportation will send $228,907,254 to South Florida airports as part of the $2.2 trillion stimulus package that the White House and Congress agreed on at the end of last month.
“These funds will help airport operators meet ongoing needs and manage current construction projects as operating expenses increase and revenues plummet,” the congresswoman’s office noted.
“The coronavirus pandemic has impacted every sector of our society, and I am pleased that we were able to include this much-needed emergency aid to airports in our district as they confront this health and economic crisis,” said Mucarsel-Powell. “South Florida is heavily dependent on these transportation hubs to receive critical aid and help our economy recover. We have to make sure they have the necessary funds to stay afloat during these tough times so our economy can return to normal when this crisis passes.”
Miami International Airport is getting the bulk of the funds as DOT is sending $206,949,557 to it. Key West International Airport is receiving $21,789,697 in federal funds. Miami Executive TMB and FL Keys Marathon International are each receiving $69,000. Miami Homestead General Aviation X51 will get $30,000.
