Report: Florida Veterans Would Need to Spend 89.7% of Income to Cover Rehab Fees

Thirty percent of U.S. states have annual rehabilitation costs that exceed the incomes of veterans. A recent report reveals that veterans living in Florida would need to spend an astonishing 89.7% of their salary to cover drug rehabilitation expenses.

Zinnia Health, which operates drug and alcohol rehab centers in South Florida, gathered data from organizations such as the National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics (NCDAS). Their findings indicate several financial challenges veterans face when trying to afford drug rehabilitation services in Florida and throughout the United States.

The research analyzes the average annual incomes of veterans and compares them to the average costs of residential drug rehabilitation services in each state. The results show that in 15 states, the annual costs of rehabilitation exceed the average income of veterans, making recovery unattainable for many.

While veterans’ costs in Florida are high, the worst state for affordability is Wyoming, where veterans spend 133.8% of their income on annual drug rehabilitation costs—the highest rate in the U.S.

Dr. Christine Curtis, the National Director of Veteran Programming at Zinnia Health, commented, “Today, good health encompasses more than just physical well-being. Mental health is a critical part of overall wellness, especially for veterans who face unique challenges related to their service. Organizations like Zinnia Health highlight the need for accessible, high-quality behavioral health care for military service members and their families.”

This research underscores the urgent need for affordable drug rehabilitation services for veterans. In states where treatment costs exceed the average veteran income, there are significant gaps in support systems that must be addressed. The report emphasized, “Severe financial barriers are preventing U.S. veterans from obtaining the addiction help they need.”
