New Report Shows Florida Hospitals That Provide Most Critical Care

The Safety Net Hospital Alliance of Florida shared new data from 2025 confirming the findings of its groundbreaking first report on hospital physician training programs. The data proves definitively that Safety Net Hospitals are Florida’s leaders in Graduate Medical Education (GME).

“This report shows tremendous success! Our hospitals are always on call and provide the most critical, complex care in the state – and are among the best in the nation. This update validates findings from the cornerstone GME Match Rates and Quality, 2020-24 Report, that Safety Net Hospitals are attracting more doctors-in-training than other hospitals,” said Safety Net Hospitals CEO Justin Senior.

Safety Net Hospitals President & COO Lindy Kennedy adds, “This 2025 data proves once and for all, that Safety Net Hospitals set the pace for training the next generation of Florida’s doctors. Safety Net Hospitals comprise only 14% of hospitals, yet almost 50% of the new doctors are choosing our hospitals to complete their training. This is because medical school graduates seek out high quality programs when considering where to do their training. For Florida families, that means more communities gaining access to well-trained, compassionate doctors.”

More Doctors Choosing Safety Net Hospitals for Education and Training

●      Safety Net Hospitals capped off this years 93% match rate at 100% after the supplemental matches were announced.

●      Safety Net Hospitals comprise only 14% of hospitals, yet 60% of Florida’s top-performing hospitals are Safety Net Hospitals as scored by producing over 700 matches and a match rate above the overall state match rate.

●      Safety Net Hospital newer programs dominate the list of newer programs by producing an astounding 100% match rate year after year.  This proves that GME quality is more important than the year a GME program began.

Other Florida Hospitals Rise to the Doctor Shortage Challenge

The percentage of medical school graduates choosing to continue training in Florida hospitals grew from 85.8% in 2020 to 90.1% in 2025.  Since 2020, the number of:

●      New doctors training in Florida increased by nearly 50%.

●      Available slots grew by more than 40%.

●      Hospitals administering GME grew from 58 in 2020 to 65 in 2025.

●      Hospitals with more than 70 matches and above the state overall match rate doubled.

Senior concludes, “Excellence in care and excellence in training go hand-in-hand and that is why our hospitals consistently lead in both. Every physician we train represents another step toward ensuring every Florida family continues to have access to outstanding care close to home.”
